A concept album inspired by Jean Luc Nancy’s “Corpus”. A blend of spoken word, electroacoustic textures and instruments, found sounds and voice, these tracks evolved from a series of recording sessions held in Italy between 2018 and 2021.
This release had a quite long incubation, almost two years and a half of tryouts, interruptions and afterthoughts to find a possible way to decipher this ineffable and particularly crucial moment of Barbara’s life.
The lyrics represent the attempt to transfigure the fragility into which her body was definitely sinking: a private emotional labyrinth made of abandonment, imperfection, vulnerability, time, alienation, sensuality, illness, identity. A sad and carnal quasi geography of the body, strongly related to a denied, (un)revealed, recovered sensuality.
Barbara wanted the music to preserve a sense of vulnerability and spontaneity therefore during the post production process she kept plenty of unvarnished sounds (teeth, fingers, mouth), half broken melodies, cracked words, ghostly echoes.
The generous musicians involved improvised following very subtle suggestions in the attempt to paint a picture in which everything is exposed to unexpected change; a kaleidoscope of sensations tied to disbelief, fear, and sudden absence.
The fluctuating vocal melodies fade into the electroacoustic interventions of Marco Bonini (electronics and guitar), Giulio Maschio (drums), Elio Martusciello (guitar, bass, synths, manipulations), Marco Messina (electronics), Massimiliano Sacchi (clarinets), Erica Scherl (violin), Andrea Serrapiglio (cello), Teho Teardo (guitar, piano, strings), and weaving languidly in and out, in a slow fragmented exploration that is sometimes painful, sometimes steady, sometimes disorienting.
A collective but gaunt architecture opened to mesmerizing sonic landscapes around which the body unfolds its maps.
The artwork is curated by Raffaella Nappo.
Her multifaceted artistic practice bridges distinct realms from drawing to painting, from photography to video and installation, blending analog and digital . Her work on Body Maps portrays a world of delicate images as the footprints of a rarefied, delicate but still intense inner world.
Body Maps has been endorsed by Marco Contini’s [Foledrol Records] special and encouraging gaze.
